E-Waste Tour (Learning)

The tour was organized by KDI and Afrotecha-Urban, represented by Gathanga Ndung’u from Afrotecha-Urban, Wacera Thande, and Anita Wesonga from KDI. The first site visit took place in Ngara, where participants engaged with the E-Waste Initiative Kenya team to understand how electronic waste is accessed, managed, and repurposed for market reuse. The experience provided great insights into how e-waste can be turned into valuable components rather than being left to pollute the environment.
Later in the day, the team toured the Dandora dumping site, guided by Cricket Writes, Harun Baraza (Jamali), and Davis Tafari. This visit offered a deeper understanding of how waste is received, sorted, and transformed through the circular economy processes—including repurposing, repairing, reengineering, and recycling. Participants witnessed firsthand how informal waste handlers play a crucial role in sustaining the circular waste system despite the harsh working conditions.
The day concluded with a visit to the WEEE Centre - Utawala, where the group learned about the detailed processes of waste handling, inventory recording, weighing, sorting, testing, and dismantling. The team observed various machines used in the process, such as the cable striper, plastic shredder, balling machine, glass grinder, and plastic melting machine. It was emphasized that noisy machine operations are scheduled to minimize disturbance to nearby communities. The final stop was at the WEEE refurbishment centre, where participants learned how old computer equipment can be customized and brought back to life using e-waste materials—a fitting conclusion to a highly educational and impactful first day of the tour.
