Sports Empowerment

Sport as a Force for Good
ETCO believes that sport is one of the most powerful tools for building healthy, resilient communities. Our Sports Empowerment programme organises activities for all ages — from children's football to senior volleyball — creating spaces where young people can channel energy, develop discipline, and build bonds that keep them away from crime, substance abuse, and other harmful influences.
The Final Whistle Tournament
Our flagship sporting event is the Final Whistle tournament, run under the theme "Sports for Sobriety." Led by ETCO's Sports Department, the series brings together 14 teams every Sunday over five weeks, with competitive football as the vehicle for youth engagement and anti-substance-abuse messaging. The tournament has become a fixture in the Kibera sporting calendar, drawing players and spectators from across the community.
Junior Rugby in Kibera
Rugby belongs in Kibera too. ETCO is building a junior rugby programme grounded in the sport's core values — integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline, and respect. With shirts donated by friends of the programme and encouragement from the Kenya Rugby Union, we are introducing children to a sport that teaches teamwork and resilience. Our partnership with Nondies RFC has brought two CSR editions to Nyayo Highrise, combining rugby coaching with feeding, learning materials, and essentials distribution.
Volleyball and Community Tournaments
ETCO co-hosted the 8th Edition Mega Volleyball Tournament at Highrise Volleyball Club Grounds — two days of competitive play, community energy, and youth empowerment through sport. These large-scale events bring visibility to Kibera's sporting talent and create opportunities for players to be scouted and supported.
Talent Scouting
Our weekly programmes double as scouting opportunities. During Saturday feeding and holiday activities, we identify children and young people with sporting talent and connect them with coaching, equipment, and competitive platforms. Week 18's scouting event combined a youth football tournament with stationery donations — investing in both sporting and academic futures.
Partnerships
The Tujiamini SportPesa programme has backed ETCO's sports work alongside our other initiatives, recognising that sport, feeding, and environmental care are interconnected pillars of community development. These partnerships ensure that tournaments are properly resourced and that sporting activities reach beyond the pitch into life skills, health awareness, and social cohesion.
