A good day for Githeri (Traditional Nutritious Meal)
Steam rose from the pots and the kitchen smelled like childhood — maize and beans slow-cooked until the edges soften and the flavour deepens. Githeri is not fancy food; it is honest food, the kind that fills a stomach without pretending to be something imported.
Every Saturday our children feeding programme opens its doors, and today was githeri day. Children lined up with their plates; youth and elders joined too, because hunger does not respect age brackets. Someone joked that the beans were counting themselves; someone else said grace like they meant it.
We are feeding more than 350 children weekly, alongside elders and young people who need a steady place to belong. That only happens because people send help — cash on M-PESA, sacks from a church, a business clearing its storeroom. It is not charity as performance; it is food moving from generosity to a spoon.
