Donations of Food and Essential Goods
Supporting Vulnerable Families
Since February 2020, ETCO has been reaching vulnerable families in Nyayo Highrise Ward and surrounding areas with food and essential goods. What began as emergency response during the Covid-19 pandemic has grown into a sustained programme that now supports thousands of households, working alongside community health volunteers to identify and serve those in greatest need.
Protecting Girls and Empowering Boys
One of our primary focuses is protecting young girls from exploitation driven by basic needs. Many girls in Kibera face pressure to seek sanitary pads and other essentials through dangerous means. ETCO supplies girls with feminine hygiene products and provides education about reproductive health, the dangers of early pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections. We are grateful to the women's organisations we collaborate with and the generous contributors who make this work possible.
We have also recognised that young boys face significant risks — substance abuse, peer pressure, and depression that can lead to self-harm. To address this, we involve boys in positive activities including sports, art, and life skills training, and provide them with educational materials on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. These resources are donated by volunteers and sponsors from the local community.
Emergency Response
When crisis strikes, ETCO mobilises quickly. After fires in Silanga left families with almost nothing, we distributed donated clothing and essentials to those affected. When severe flooding hit communities along the Ngong River corridor, we partnered with SDI-Kenya to distribute relief food across Kibra — reaching flood-affected residents, displaced families, elderly people, and disabled community members facing acute vulnerability.
How Donations Reach Families
- Food supplies distributed through our Saturday programme and targeted outreach
- Feminine hygiene products and reproductive health education for girls
- Educational materials, sports equipment, and life skills resources for boys
- Emergency relief following fires, floods, and other disasters
- Clothing, kitchen equipment, and household essentials for vulnerable households
Every donation — whether a bag of maize, a box of sanitary pads, or a set of cooking utensils — represents dignity. ETCO ensures these contributions reach the families who need them most, paired with education and sensitisation that builds long-term resilience.
